SS21 Soshiotsuki BDH Todaiji Denim Jacket

SOSHIOTSUKI is a Tokyo-based label established in 2015 by Soshi Otsuki that has quickly gained international recognition for its intellectual approach of merging perfectly cut tailoring with Japanese long-running historical lineage. The brand earned a shortlist nomination for the LVMH Prize in 2016 before ultimately winning the award in 2025. This triggered a global expansion partnership with Tomorrow and a seat as Guest Designer at Pitti Uomo.

His Spring/Summer 2021 collection, titled 呉牛喘月 (a Japanese idiom of Chinese origin meaning to be so frightened by a past experience that one fears harmless things), bridged conceptual intent and everyday wearability. Otsuki deployed lightweight fabrics and subtle Japanese heritage references (such as a hidden Daibutsu print found on the inner lining of the bondage jacket) and paired it with softened structures and disciplined proportions.

A defining characteristic of SOSHIOTSUKI is its commitment to slow design through recurring garments that evolve over time. Rather than seasonal reinvention, select silhouettes reappear with minor adjustments, reinforcing the “good design does not expire” philosophy.

The BDH denim jacket is one of the brand’s evergreen garments, returning each season with nuanced changes in material and proportion while preserving its core silhouette. Inspired by the monumental wooden doors of Todaiji Temple in Nara, the jacket features repeated pleating and rivet placements that recall the parallel vertical and horizontal lines found on the temple’s monumental door surfaces. Within the SS21 collection, the BDH denim jacket appears in look 4, with added carved wooden ring embellishments on the hem loops and sleeves
