Founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana, Celine began as a made to measure children’s shoe boutique before expanding into ready to wear, perfumes, and leather goods. By the 1970s it was known for practical luxury shaped by equestrian influences and refined daywear for modern women. The house entered a new phase after its 1996 acquisition by LVMH, which ensured commercial stability but left its creative direction inconsistent, setting the groundwork for a future reset.
That reset arrived promptly with Phoebe Philo in 2008. Philo transformed Celine into a cultural and intellectual force by rejecting overt sensuality and trend driven design. Her work centered heavily on precision and proportion, introducing garments that were functional and quietly radical. Accessories such as the Luggage Tote became symbols of discreet status, while her vision of the Celine woman prioritised independence and interiority. In doing so, Philo redefined modern luxury as something personal and self possessed, cultivating a devoted following that extended far beyond fashion.
In 2018, Hedi Slimane enacted a complete rupture. After receiving the baton from Philo, he removed the accent in the “E” and introduced menswear to the Celine repertoire. Slimane replaced Philo’s introspective language with a world built on youth culture, music and a renewed focus on classic French dressing. His off calendar presentations and complete takeover of the creative marketing repositioned Celine to newer heights. Though critically divisive, Slimane’s direction was commercially transformative, expanding the house into a powerful and fully articulated luxury system before his exit in 2024.
Seen on the likes of Kendrick Lamar, this pair of Serge Denim received a hickory stripe treatment and is seen on Look 8 of Slimane’s Spring Summer 2020 menswear collection, inspired by early 1970s rock & roll and Hollywood glamour.
