In 2015, a single bold act sent baanai’s artistic journey into flight. Born in 1977, his work often begins with a blank surface that slowly disappears under dense layers of repeating letters. His style balances between graffiti and abstract expressionism, infused with a deeply personal voice.
Feeling adrift, baanai submitted his portfolio to Rei Kawakubo. He attached his work alongside a letter of intent that read:
“I am a man having no high educational backgrounds, no specific working careers, no accomplishments in the field of art either.
Yet, could I ask Ms. Rei Kawakubo to have a look over my works?”
Ten years have passed since he sent that letter to Comme des Garçons. The echo of his bold, insistent script still resonates within the CDG universe. His arrival placed him among a revered group of collaborators, including Mondongo, Brothers Quay, Ai Weiwei, assume vivid astro focus, René Burri, JR, Alisa Yoffe, and Katsuhiro Otomo.
For Spring Summer 2019, baanai’s layered “Comme des Garçons” lettering appeared throughout Rei Kawakubo’s collection, which explored themes of womanhood, aging, and the invisible weight of creativity. The show marked a shift in her approach, moving away from overt visual statements and turning inward toward the design of content and emotional resonance.
This reversible skirt features an all-over print by baanai and a deliberate front cut revealing its inner layers.
