SS17 Junya Watanabe x 1UP Graffiti Trench Coat

Junya Watanabe’s Spring Summer 2017 womenswear collection was a forceful study in how underground subcultures can be structurally embedded into fashion authentically. Presented in Paris, the show drew from Berlin’s underground and graffiti communities, most notably 1UP and Berlin Kidz.

Silhouettes throughout the show pushed outward and upward, defined by geometric, origami like structures layered over familiar street staples such as tshirts, denim, and fitted trousers. Graffiti appeared on the back of garments, treating them as moving canvases.

Styling and presentation sharpened the collection’s rebellious tone. Heavy, grunge inspired makeup and deliberately unrefined hair rooted the looks in a nocturnal, anti polished world. Rather than romanticizing rebellion, SS17 presented it as something physical and worn, carried through the body.

This trench coat features a belted waist, double breasted front, and a graffiti print on the back that reads “Feed the kids with garlic to find them in the dark”, a homage to one of 1UP’s street tags (located in Madrid).
