HaaT by Issey Miyake Patchwork Hagi Pants

HaaT by Issey Miyake was founded in 2000 as a textile focused line developed by Makiko Minagawa, a long time collaborator of Issey Miyake whose career has been deeply rooted in material research since the early 1970s. The line emerged at a moment when the Miyake studio was increasingly oriented toward synthetic innovation, particularly pleating, prompting Minagawa to establish a platform dedicated to natural fibres, hand processes, and the preservation of traditional weaving communities.

The name HaaT carries layered meaning, HaaT plays on the word “heart,” alluding to the emotional core of garments made in Japan, where the brand is based. Its phonetic counterpart, HaaTH, refers to “hand” and “handcraft” in Hindi, foregrounding the artisanal labor behind each piece. When combined, the term HaaT also means “market” in Sanskrit. This positions the label as a space of exchange between people, cultures, and materials rather than a conventional fashion brand.

At the core of HaaT is a sustained dialogue between Japanese and Indian textile traditions. Minagawa’s formative experiences working with Indian artisans in the 1980s shaped the brand’s long term commitment to handloom weaving, regional embroidery techniques, and materials such as khadi, alongside Japanese practices including Kyoto based weaving and climate responsive fabrics like Kyo Chijimi. These collaborations are structured as long term relationships rather than seasonal outsourcing, allowing techniques that sit outside industrial fashion systems to continue evolving within a contemporary context.

This beautiful pair of hagi pants is constructed from segmented panels of fabric, joined vertically and composed of materials with varying weights (such as see through floral lace, sparkling pompom, and mesh.)
