Rick Owens’ Autumn/Winter 2022 "Strobe" menswear collection is a striking exploration of identity, spectacle, and the transformative power of fashion. Drawing inspiration from Ancient Egyptian motifs, industrial lighting, and club culture, Owens transformed the runway into an immersive environment where strobe lights, and pulsating music interacted with his garments.
The collection challenged conventional notions of masculinity and the boundaries of menswear while reclaiming sleaze and decadence as sources of confidence and expression.
Silhouettes dominated the collection, from oversized shoulders to floor-length coats and sculptural puffers. Luminous helmet-headpieces created figures that commanded space and attention, while hooded gimp-style garments and exaggerated eyewear enveloped the face. Platform Kiss boots further emphasized the rebellious, provocative attitude that framed menswear as a tool for self-expression rather than mere utility.
Owens combined tactile, heavy fabrics with refined craftsmanship. Organic cotton, duchesse silk, slow-loomed wool, and leather from certified tanneries anchored the collection in luxury, while reflective panels, metallic chains, and distressed surfaces added depth. Every element reinforced a careful balance between conceptual daring and wearable structure.
Featured in the final few looks of the collection, these corduroy Bolan trousers are characterized by a high-rise waist, slim upper leg, and pronounced flare, revealed by Owens’ signature spiral banana cut zip system first introduced in his earlier collections.
