DRKSHDW was launched in 2005 as Rick Owens’ foray into denim which became a full extension of the main label. The diffusion line was created to make his stark, architectural vision wearable for everyday life.
Owens approached DRKSHDW as an ongoing experiment in reduction. The sublabel explored how far his aesthetic could be simplified while retaining its identity. Where the mainline relied on sculptural shapes and rare, luxurious fabrics, DRKSHDW focused on cotton jersey, denim, and utilitarian materials. The result is a stripped-down reflection of Owens’ dark, ethereal style, with the same elongated proportions and monolithic sense of form presented at a more consumer friendly price point.
The line emphasizes structure, movement, and texture over decoration. Silhouettes often feature low rises, layered shapes, and long lines that echo the mainline, while materials are chosen for durability and drape. DRKSHDW also functions as a laboratory for recurring cuts and shapes, allowing Owens to refine designs for broader application and collaborations.
The AW14 “Moody” kilted Detroit pants evolved from Rick’s earlier “Savage” silhouettes and features an attached short skirt/kilt panel that sits over the waistband of a Detroit cut pant.
