Vetements Autumn Winter 2019 opened like a browser with too many tabs, with none of them safe. Demna pushed past the glossy front page of the internet into what he called the dark net, treating it as both mood board and warning label. The result was a collection preoccupied with surveillance, data anxiety, and the new social archetype he framed as geeks becoming the new punks. AW19 was a study of how technology scripts behavior and how clothing mirrors that script back at us.
On the runway the language was blunt. Balaclavas and face coverings erased identity. Boxy bombers, hulking outerwear, and baggy cargos staged a silhouette of withdrawal. Graphics did the shouting. Interpol insignia, upside down anarchy marks, misspelled corporate stand-ins, and bureaucratic seals turned garments into counterfeit credentials. All while Paris outside was still gripped by weekly Yellow Vest protests.
Read against Vetements’ timeline, AW19 sits at a pressure point. Within months Demna would exit the label he co-founded, saying he had accomplished his mission and leaving the collective to continue under Guram’s leadership.
AW19 also marked the third year of collaboration with Levi’s. First launched in Spring 2017 (previously covered on our page), the project invited 18 heritage brands to create a collection entirely based on collaborations. From Levi’s, this meant taking classic denim pieces and pushing them through Vetements’ lens of deconstruction. Splitting seams, exaggerating proportions, and reconfiguring familiar shapes into something uncanny.
This massively oversized shirt is finished with multiple raw-edged hems, and marked by the signature Levi’s x Vetements leather patch on the right. It reinforces Vetements’ strategy of elevating everyday basics into confrontational fashion, blurring the line between staple and statement.
