Launched in 1988, Comme Des Garçons Shirt serves as a diffusion line dedicated to reimagining the simple shirt. Rei Kawakubo transforms this wardrobe staple through her signature tropes—deconstruction, patchworking, bold graphics, and experimental shapes. Birthing pieces that challenge traditional design conventions.
The line is also renowned for its collaborative projects, with each season seeing a new collaboration with notable creatives and brands such as Invader, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Supreme, Futura, and many more.
For Spring/Summer 2021, Rei Kawakubo teamed up with contemporary Chinese artist Yue Minjun. Known for creating surreal self-caricature paintings featuring his very own cackling face. Yue is a central figure in the Cynical Realist art movement, often addressing socio-political issues through his radical, thought-provoking ways.
In this collection, his signature "Laughing Man" motif was plastered across tailored garments, including jackets, shirts, bottoms, and sneakers. Beyond Yue’s graphics, the collection also featured reinterpreted formalwear with classic CDG elements such as elongated collars and deconstructed asymmetrical vests.
