After Hedi Slimane’s departure, Saint Laurent faced the challenge of finding a worthy successor. Enter Anthony Vaccarello. The Belgian-Italian designer honed his craft under fashion luminaries like Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace, making him a natural fit to carry the brand forward.
For the Spring/Summer 2020 menswear collection, Vaccarello set the stage with an unforgettable backdrop: a California coastline runway, where waves gently kissed the models’ feet. The setting evoked a vast desertscape reminiscent of Marrakech, a city deeply woven into the brand’s history and an endless source of inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent.
Revisiting 1970s hedonism and rockstar nonchalance, Vaccarello reimagined these influences for 21st-century Los Angeles. Silhouettes were lean and elongated, rendered in a palette of inky blacks, dusty neutrals, and shimmering metallics. Sharp tailoring met diaphanous fabrics—silk blouses unbuttoned to the navel, high-waisted trousers skimming the sand, and leather jackets cut with razor-sharp precision. Drawing from the bohemian masculinity of icons like Mick Jagger and Serge Gainsbourg, Vaccarello crafted a wardrobe fit for the eternal wanderer.
Among the standout pieces was a zebra-print shirt. In stark black and white, its bold motif embodied the decadent energy of the collection—equally suited for a moonlit rooftop in Marrakech or a smoke-filled Parisian club.
