Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection deviates from his synonymous dark palette with an injection of vibrant, traditional sensual prints.
In this color-infused runway, pieces were overloaded with traditional japanese scripts and erotica juxtaposed with bright floral motifs. He coined the style “Modern Ukiyo-e.” Ukiyo-e is a period of Japanese art featuring female beauties, theater performers, landscapes, and flora and fauna. It translates to “Pictures of the floating world,” depicting the red-light districts prominent during the Edo era.
Tired of the monotony in fashion, Yohji Yamamoto wanted to break free from the boredom that plagued the industry. Through seduction and complex techniques, he breathed fresh air into his designs, evident in the varied fabric choices, intricate tailoring, and the motif “Yohji is fresh”.
These wide pants feature an asymmetrical gathered pleat with a cinchable braided drawstring and an unapologetically bold geisha motif.
