SS19 Loewe by Jonathan Anderson Embellished Intarsia Canvas Loafers
Taking over a traditional Spanish leather house, Jonathan Anderson repositioned Loewe beyond its identity as a heritage brand, placing it at the intersection of fine art, craft, gentle masculinity, and the internet. During his 11 years at the house, he introduced the iconic Puzzle Bag, established the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize and collaborated with countless artisans and artists, transforming Loewe into one of contemporary fashion’s most influential creative forces.
For Spring Summer 2019, Anderson created a playful world shaped by nostalgia and childhood memories while paying homage to the sea and Loewe’s Spanish roots. Presented alongside the 21st installment of Loewe’s ongoing series of seasonal publications, the collection marked the second collaboration with American art photographer Duane Michals, an artist admired by Anderson. Eleven male models were photographed in various states of dress and undress within a domestic setting, framing a surreal and intimate portrait of masculinity.
Inspired by childhood nostalgia, the collection explored exaggerated proportions and playful details, ideas that Anderson had also been developing through his own JW Anderson collections. The collection featured a series of unexpected contrasts, from Dumbo and lion motifs stretched across elongated sweatshirts and shorts to sea urchin prints appearing on relaxed shirts and trousers. Multistripe shorts and tops echoed 1920s-era men’s bathing suits, blurring the boundaries between everyday clothing.
Anderson dedicated the collection to his younger brother, explaining that he wanted him to be able to walk into a Loewe store and "find something that was incredibly crafted and forward thinking but also accessible. It’s about how you break down those luxury barriers inside stores."
Featured in Look 5 of his Spring Summer 2019 menswear, these canvas loafers feature an intarsia woven feet motif, crocheted 'rings' embellishment, and leather soles stamped with the house's emblem.
