Vetements, one of the most disruptive fashion brands of the 21st century, was founded by brothers Demna and Guram Gvasalia. The label rose to prominence by challenging the fashion industry’s unspoken rules. It presented co-ed shows, redefined luxury through streetwear influences, and staged collections in unconventional venues, all while remaining committed to its core philosophy: a study of clothes about clothes.
The Spring/Summer 2017 collection was built entirely on collaboration. The Gvasalia brothers invited 18 brands to reinterpret their own signature products through the lens of Vetements. These included names such as Champion, Levi’s, Juicy Couture, and Manolo Blahnik, each contributing to a lineup that blurred the line between high fashion and everyday clothing.
“We thought we’d go straight to the brands who make all these things best, and ask to do something in our way with each one,” Demna explained. “The people who work at Vetements don’t really wear designer fashion—a lot of these are the labels they wear all the time.”
The collection premiered during Paris Haute Couture Week, well ahead of the traditional ready-to-wear calendar. It was staged inside Galeries Lafayette, a renowned department store, during regular business hours. This unconventional setting allowed everyday shoppers to witness the show and broke down the sense of exclusivity typically associated with couture presentations.
The collection’s collaborative nature and cultural accessibility resonated strongly with younger audiences, particularly those who value transparency and brand familiarity. By incorporating widely recognized labels into its collection, Vetements tapped into nostalgia while advancing new ideas about fashion hierarchy. The strategy drew widespread attention and inspired other luxury houses to pursue similar collaborations, contributing to a broader shift in the fashion industry.
This hoodie, created in partnership with Champion, features elongated sleeves and a front script print reading “Antwerpen.” Paying homage to his alma mater.
