SS17 Junya Watanabe X 1 Up Graffiti Poem Leather Denim Jacket
Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection explores the beautiful relationship between Berlin’s underground, alternative culture, and fashion.
“Neither extreme construction nor streetwear stand alone stylistically. They are complementary and when merged together, become stronger.” — from SS17 collection show notes.
This birthed a sophisticated collection featuring a myriad of influences and past design explorations.
Geometric, origami-like garments, militia-inspired layers, and deconstructed pieces return alongside heavy, grunge-inspired makeup by Isamaya Ffrench, a longtime collaborator for Junya’s womenswear.
These elements meld spontaneously, presenting itself as a tangible medley of culture subversion and garment innovation.
For authenticity, Junya Watanabe looked to the notorious Berlin graffiti crews — 1 UP and Berlin Kidz to extrapolate from. This deconstructed denim jacket features leather woven sleeves and graffiti that reads “Feed the kids with garlic to find them in the dark.”
