Fumito Ganryu, a graduate of Bunka Fashion College, began his career at Comme des Garçons in 2004, initially working as a pattern-maker for Junya Watanabe. In 2007, he launched his own subline under the Comme des Garcons umbrella, named Ganryu, which continued until its closure in 2017.
Ganryu’s designs often featured experimental constructions and unique reinterpretations of wardrobe staples, drawing comparisons to Junya Watanabe’s work. Both designers shared a deep appreciation for pushing the boundaries of fashion design.
The Spring/Summer 2017 collection focused heavily on denim experimentation. Ganryu transformed denim through contrast stitching, displaced pockets, and deconstructed silhouettes. A standout feature was the ingenious play on fabric: by reversing the main fabric and the lining, garments appeared inverted, creating a subversive visual effect.
These Japanese heavyweight denim trousers exemplify this innovative approach, featuring reinforced front panels, hammer loops, and a cinchable waistband that accommodates up to a 40-inch waist.
