For Spring Summer 2015 Womenswear, Junya Watanabe explored what happens when a perfect shape collides with the imperfect human body.
The conceptual foundation of SS15 was the circle, chosen for its mathematical purity and visual neutrality. Instead of appearing as surface graphics, circles became the building blocks of the garments themselves, forcing two dimensional patternmaking into wearable three dimensional forms through cutting, layering, and intersection. This method transformed the circle into a governing logic, generating volume, negative space, and secondary shapes through overlap and tension, with silhouettes distorted by gravity, movement, and the body.
Material choice played a crucial role in this geometric investigation. Identical circular forms behaved radically differently when rendered in leather, PVC, neoprene, cotton, or glittered textiles, producing silhouettes that ranged from rigid and architectural to soft and buoyant. Variations in tactility and color emphasized how texture alters volume and visual weight.
Styling further abstracted the body. Futuristic headpieces, taped red lips, and controlled hair stripped individuality from the models. This deliberate dehumanization shifted attention entirely onto form and silhouette, enhancing the entire spatial experience of the show.
First seen in look 8, these pink wedged platform shoes are adorned with perfectly circular cutouts.
