Your favorite designer’s favorite designer. Hussein Chalayan is a Cypriot British designer known for merging fashion, architecture, and performance in ways that challenge how clothing relates to the body and environment. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins in the early 1990s (with a sold out graduation collection), he has built a career defined by experimental research and theatrical runway ideas, from motorised transforming dresses to garments embedded with LED screens.
His label started in 1994. In 2008 Puma took a majority stake in his label, but Chalayan later regained control and used this transition to refine his public image. Around 2010 to 2011 he formally shifted from the name Hussein Chalayan to the simplified label Chalayan, a strategic rebrand that offered a cleaner global identity. The change marked an effort to balance commercial viability with the intellectual and experimental qualities that defined his earlier work and allowed him to maintain artistic independence while reaching a broader audience.
His Spring Summer 2013 womenswear collection was noticeably more toned down, existing as a more palatable season after his flashier conceptual moments. The runway featured sharp tailoring, sculptural shapes, and a restrained palette of whites and neutrals punctuated with bright accents. Oversized hats created a protective, sheltering mood and gave the show a tinge of tension.
The surface treatments of the garments became the collection’s conceptual anchor. In the last few looks, marble like, painterly, and trompe l’oeil prints evoked veined stone, weathered surfaces, and melting textures. These illusions created a sense of eroded materiality, which resembled trash (hence trash print).
These pair of silk leggings features concealed back zips and an all over “trash” collage print seen in the last few looks of the collection.
