Ann Demeulemeester has always been less of a designer and more of a poet who speaks in fabric. As one of the fabled Antwerp Six, she has relentlessly sculpted a world in fashion with her sensual yet rebellious poetic design language. She launched her eponymous line in 1985, crafting season after season of deconstructed, romantic garments until 2013, with SS14 being the last collection she had a hand in. In 2021, she returned to her namesake label after an eight-year hiatus (during which she pursued pottery and made glasswares under the 'Serax' label).
Her Spring/Summer 2013 menswear collection marked a departure from her signature slim silhouettes and dark palette, embracing color while expanding on proportion and structure. Deep-wine purples, fiery oranges, and cool sea blues replaced her usual monochrome tones, proving that bold colors could seamlessly integrate into her romantic and avant-garde aesthetic.
The collection featured ultra-light silk kimono-style tops tied at the side, offering a fresh alternative to her traditional waistcoats. These were paired with relaxed, wide-leg trousers adorned with stripes or graphic prints, blending Eastern-inspired elements with Demeulemeester’s signature layered tailoring. Overcoats and long waistcoats draped over elongated dress shirts created a fluid, dynamic silhouette. The mix of fabrics—including silk, cotton, and wool—added depth, while floral and fauna motifs, alongside stripes, introduced a softer, more expressive dimension to the looks. This collection demonstrated Demeulemeester’s ability to evolve her menswear designs while maintaining her distinctive poetic sensibility.
