Fumito Ganryu, born in Fukuoka in 1976 and a graduate of Bunka Fashion College, began his career at Comme des Garçons as a pattern maker under Junya Watanabe. This experience shaped his understanding of construction, proportion, and innovation. In 2007, he launched his own label under the Comme des Garçons umbrella, GANRYU, positioning himself among designers who merged the brand’s avant-garde sensibilities with a more casual approach.

GANRYU developed a distinct identity that combined everyday streetwear with conceptual experimentation. Ganryu reworked familiar garments like sweatshirts and jeans through innovative cuts, detailing, and function, resulting in hybrid silhouettes and playful constructions that redefined menswear while remaining approachable. 

Despite its growing following, the line ended in 2017 after its Spring/Summer collection. No official explanation was ever given, though some speculated that Ganryu sought greater independence or that sales varied across markets. Regardless, the brand left a lasting impression for its balance of wearability and conceptual design and is often remembered as one of the most inventive projects under the CdG umbrella.

In 2018, Ganryu returned independently with his namesake label, debuting at Pitti Uomo. Free from the structure of CdG, he continued exploring functionality, comfort, and modern living through technical fabrics and fluid silhouettes. His work maintains the same thoughtful balance of utility, craftsmanship, and quiet innovation that defined his earlier designs.

This jacket from Spring/Summer 2012, an era when GANRYU had yet to hold runway presentations, encapsulates his early design language while revisiting one of Comme des Garçons’ classic motifs, the polka dot. It features his signature contrast stitching, two polka dot colors, concealed mesh underarms for breathability, and deconstructed paneling.
