"Clusters.” “Randomness.” “Cacophony.” These were the words Rei Kawakubo used to describe her inspiration for her Spring/Summer 2008 collection, aptly titled Cacophony. Letting her inner child run loose, she created a show that intertwined polar opposites and embraced the seemingly random.
Petaled shirts were paired with deconstructed outer layers of menswear tailoring. Jackets sliced vertically were layered over frilly bloomers. Magician capes were fused with sweaters and hoodies. A personal favorite from the show was the 2D flat cutouts shaped like dresses, worn over patterned blouses.
These sculptural, colorful amalgamations gave the looks a multidimensional quality, disrupting traditional silhouettes. The almost caricature-like fragmentation of materials, patterns, motifs, and colors could be seen as Kawakubo’s exploration of the complexity of individuality.
This beautifully layered jacket from the collection features four sleeves, dual collars, and exposed pockets. Creating the illusion of wearing multiple layers.
