In October 1998, the menswear counterpart to the iconic groundbreaking Maison Martin Margiela Line 1 was introduced. Dubbed Line 10, it debuted in Spring/Summer 1999, offering men the same innovative, anti-fashion treatment Margiela pioneered in his womenswear collections.
Jewelry designs were initially integrated into their respective lines until 2005, when Margiela announced that all accessories (excluding the artisanal Lines “0” and “0/10”) would be unified under a new classification: Line 11.
While the world is divided on the ethicality of donning dog tags, it has been a recurring motif in Margiela’s work. His fascination with them began in SS99, where he reproduced an oversized dog tag inspired by a GI Joe figure. This theme reappeared in several notable forms, such as the 2004 artisanal charm necklace, the SS09 show invitation, and the SS07 Artisanal trompe l’oeil long sleeve.
This beautiful piece of margiela history features a leather ID tag paired with an engraved coin. The coin bears the signature circled “10” emblem on one side and “2004” on the reverse.
