In the 1990s, an underground movement was quietly taking shape. Led by Sk8thing (Shinichiro Nakamura), the elusive visionary behind CAV EMPT and one of streetwear’s most enigmatic graphic designers. Alongside Hiroshi Fujiwara, a young DJ and hip-hop whose influence ran deep in Japan’s burgeoning street culture. Together with Toru Iwai (owner of the cult-favorite select shop THIEVES) and Mizutsugu, they formed GOODENOUGH (stylized as GDEH), a brand as cryptic as it was influential, shaping the rebellious spirit of Tokyo’s Ura-Hara scene.

Deeply intertwined with skateboarding, music, and the unspoken codes of youth culture. Their aesthetic carried echoes of stussy, a brand that had once name-checked Fujiwara in a 1986 interview, leading to a transcontinental bond that remains unbroken to this day (they’d often exchange graphic tees, how cool!) But GOODENOUGH wasn’t just a brand; it was a philosophy. The founders embraced anonymity, choosing to let their work speak louder than their identities.

In 2003, GOODENOUGH created a series of hand-painted silkscreen prints where each shirt was coated in paint before the inverted stencil was lifted to reveal the brand’s name. The process was unconventional as the three-dimensionality of fabric meant some areas remained untouched by paint. But therein lay its unpredicted beauty. Each tee cracked, faded, and aged in its own unique way.

That same year, Jun Takahashi’s Undercover made waves in Paris with his Spring/Summer 2003 debut collection “Scab”. It was an audacious display of deconstruction, distressing, and chaotic hand-stitching, and also a personal response to the tragedy in United States. To commemorate his milestone, GOODENOUGH and UNDERCOVER joined forces for a “One-Off” capsule where Takahashi dismantled the hand-screened tees before reassembling them with colorful stitches and raw distressing. Mirroring the foundational aesthetic of the Scab runway. The result? A collection so rare and sought-after, it became streetwear mythology.
