For Spring/Summer 2003, Junya Watanabe invites you to surf.
Seeding inspiration from the reef-lined beaches of the Caribbean, models donned sandals and relaxed Hawaiian shirts adorned with vibrant tropical prints. The collection also paid homage to the Afrocentric, diasporic movement of Rastafari.
Watanabe frequently reinterprets various cultural and historical references through a contemporary lens. The SS03 collection is notably referred to as “One Love”. A phrase started in Jamaica amongst rastafarians and popularized in reggae and hip hop. This message of unity and inclusion remains especially inspiring in today’s turbulent landscape
