A collection name often serves as a key element of a fashion show, summarizing the theme or making it instantly memorable for consumers. For Undercover’s Spring/Summer 2000 collection, Jun Takahashi chose four different names: Teaster, SK務PT, Uparmored Council, and GFY.
SS00 was done in collaboration with a plethora of artists such as KAWS, Futura, Stash, and Sk8thing. It marked a departure from Jun’s earlier high-fashion designs, as he sought to create something more rooted in street culture.
“Before my collection for Spring/Summer 2000, I was making more high-fashion clothes. I was getting sick of super high fashion, and the street was like the root of fashion. So I decided to do something more related to the street.”
Teaster was the official name of the show, though it wasn’t mentioned on any tags. Instead, SK務PT was featured heavily on the inner tags of most runway garments. Uparmored Council was used to denote pieces done in collaboration with WTAPS, while GFY (short for “Generation F*ck You”) was used for garments featuring art from Futura, Stash, and Sk8thing.
SS00 showcased Jun Takahashi’s fluidity in crafting garments, pulling inspiration from traditional Chinese and Japanese clothing, such as the Tang suit and Hanfu. These silhouettes were reimagined with a utilitarian treatment, with materials such as reflective panels and ripstop.
