With the recent announcement of Samuel Ross’s departure, the acquisition of A Cold Wall, and the brand taking a more collective approach, we look back at the late Virgil Abloh’s first intern and his contributions to the world of fashion.
Samuel Ross dipped his toes into multiple mediums of art under Virgil’s guidance, notably at Pyrex Vision and Kanye West’s creative agency — Donda. Speaking the same visual language, their collaboration was seamless and infused with a spirit of play. At the age of 22, Ross began to explore the possibility of integrating strategic thinking and creative entrepreneurship into a brand of his own.
He developed his own label, A Cold Wall in 2015. Rooted deeply into the realms of streetwear and high fashion, with heavy emphasis on societal commentary, political deposition, and artisanal, industrial design approach. His work is often referred to as “wearable architecture” and pushes the parameters of innovation.
Ross is no stranger to other mediums of art as well. With his boutique company SR_A SR_A, founded in 2019. Functioning as a continuous exploration of industrial beauty and precision engineering, pushing the boundaries of contemporary design in architecture, furniture and more.
Lastly, he founded the Black British Artists Grants Programme, dedicated to foster, highlight and champion budding and emerging talents of color.
A Cold Wall is now spearheaded by the original team and their SS25 show just debuted in Milan Fashion Week and is irrefutably familiar to Ross’ design codes. What do you guys think?
