“No meaning,” said Junya Watanabe backstage at his Autumn/Winter 2011 menswear collection. Once again, this very demure designer delivered a collection of deceptively simple garments.
Fundamentally, if we peeled back the layers of this show, we can find a masterful juxtaposition of textures, textiles, and silhouettes rooted in military and labor-inspired designs. Can it truly be a Junya Watanabe show without militaria or Americana elements?
The collection embraced a rugged, everyday, outdoor-inspired aesthetic, with garments crafted from high-performance materials such as waxed cotton, wool, and nylon. We saw Japanese interpretations of standard duffle coats, knitted baseball and donkey jackets, peacoats, and more. The footwear was no exception, with creative reimaginings of classics like desert boots, thick-soled Timberland deck shoes, penny loafers, and brogues—all receiving the Junya treatment.
Collaborations with brands such as Hervier (French workwear specialists), Barbour (English luxury outdoor brand), Timberland, and Levi’s further grounded the collection in durable, timeless fashion.
This beautiful jacket is an amalgamation of the traditional hunting jacket and the peacoat, featuring fireman-style quick-release clasps and leather-reinforced areas for added durability in high-wear zones.
