During Undercover’s infancy stages, Jun Takahashi would lay the foundation for what’s to come for the brand, in the following decades. Striking a perfect balance between political punk, streetwear, utilitarian, and high fashion — setting Undercover apart from players in the same league.
Emblematic of Takahashi’s design codes and ethos, the Autumn/Winter 2002 Witch’s Cell Division collection exemplifies his ability to merge diverse influences into a compelling mishmash mosaic of cultural identity and references.
Shaped by the eclectic marriage of witch’s occult imagery, and mecha robots, Takahashi created a whimsical and dynamic collection plastered with iconic motifs such as crosses, witches, and stars. All inspired by childlike obsession.
AW02 collection places heavy emphasis on transmutable garments that allow wearers to “assemble components” and form new silhouettes and pieces. Reminiscent of the uniform of the Crust Punk subculture and serves as a nod to Takahashi’s AW99 collection titled “Exchange,” where garments were designed to be removable and interchangeable, held together by zippers.
This piece is a sample of the star peacoat seen on the runway, featuring tulle panels on the back, back zips, and star buttons. The final production version of the aforementioned star buttons has the ability to glow in the dark.
