Often confused with Maison Martin Margiela’s blank white label, Martin Margiela's Artisanal line, also known as Line 0 (or Line 0 10 for menswear), represents the purest expression of Martin Margiela’s design philosophy. Named after the French word ‘artisanal’, meaning ‘handcrafted,’ the line is built upon reconstruction, transforming found garments, everyday objects, and existing materials into one-of-a-kind pieces. While this methodology had been central to the Maison since its founding in 1988, the numerical Line 0 designation was formally introduced with the Maison’s numbered label system in 1997.
The process often began long before a piece was made. Margiela and his team sourced objects and materials from flea markets, antique shops, vintage dealers, military surplus stores, factories, and second-hand markets around the world. The materials was never simply reused as-is, but carefully studied and recontextualized while preserving its natural patina and the history embedded within it. Many of these pieces were produced in extremely limited quantities, with the availability of the source material often determining the final production numbers.
In 2006, Maison Martin Margiela became a Correspondent Member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, with Artisanal serving as the Maison’s official haute couture presentation. Unlike traditional notions of couture, which centered around precious materials and flawless craftsmanship, Margiela’s Artisanal approach redefined luxury by valuing concept, storytelling, craftsmanship, and transformation through common everyday objects. Rather than concealing the origins of each material, Artisanal preserved recognizable details from its previous life, allowing every object to carry its own narrative into its new form.
Released as part of Margiela’s Autumn Winter 2002 womenswear collection, this Artisanal armlet was created entirely from a fresh piece of leather sole and reshaped into a wearable cuff (there’s also a tabi sole version) while retaining the original embossed shoe size and leather maker’s stamp.
