The 1990s witnessed the rise of an underground punk and rock scene in Urahara (Ura-Harajuku, Japan). This neighborhood, home to independent boutiques, became a hub for creative youth exploring niche fashion and culture.
A Bathing Ape and WTAPS were two titans of Japanese streetwear, with legacies deeply rooted in the subcultural epicenter of Harajuku. Together, these brands have left an indelible mark on streetwear, reshaping fashion and influencing the modern streetwear scene for decades to come.
WTAPS, founded by Tetsu Nishiyama better known as Tet, is renowned for blending military and outdoor-inspired aesthetics with contemporary menswear.
Bape, established by Nigo, draws heavily on 20th-century pop culture. Nigo’s fascination with the 1968 film Planet of the Apes inspired both the brand’s name and its iconic logo. Bape’s tagline references the Japanese idiom “a bathing ape in lukewarm water,” an allusion to overindulgence—an ironic nod to the hyper-consumptive youth culture that would become Bape’s core audience.
This hunting jacket was originally released in a very limited run by BAPE, the jackets were later hand-remade by TET. The jacket features iconic NOWHERE store label tags, and BAPE and WTAPS motifs on the back, along with rugged rifle butt and elbow pads that pay homage to WTAPS’ utilitarian, military-inspired aesthetic.
