This is arguably one of fashion’s most iconic and controversial symbols: the Orb. It first appeared in Vivienne Westwood’s Autumn Winter 1987 “Harris Tweed” collection, where heritage handwoven fabrics took center stage in an avant-garde mash-up of punk and pageantry.
The original Harris Tweed orb symbol is derived from the coronation regalia and Crown Jewels, dating back to around 1910 and trademarked by the association. Westwood’s version veered dangerously close in design. Though her iteration featured distinct Saturn rings, inspired by the astronomy magazines she found lying around her son’s room.
The fusion of a monarchical emblem with planetary rings perfectly encapsulates her ethos of looking both backward and forward, embracing history while challenging it.
The dispute between Westwood and Harris Tweed ultimately benefited both parties. Thanks to her, Harris Tweed gained recognition beyond Britain, while tweed fans discovered her rebellious designs. Sparking a lifelong partnership that continues to this day.
This beautiful choker is strung together with faux pearls and finished with a Saturn Orb rendered in bas relief. A technique where the design is slightly raised from a flat surface, giving it subtle depth and dimension.
