Fashion is a constant dialogue between eras, cultures, and philosophies. Few brands engage in it as masterfully as Kapital. Brainchild of Toshikiyo and Kazuhiro Hirata, Kapital was founded in 1985 in Kojima, Japan. A city synonymous with denim craftsmanship. Kapital began as a pursuit of fusing Western heritage with Japanese tradition, a vision that continues to define the brand.

Kapital’s story is also intertwined with Japan’s post-war fascination with American culture. After World War II, Hollywood cinema, rock ‘n’ roll, Levi’s and leather jackets left an imprint on Japan. By the 1960s and ’70s, Youths In Tokyo’s Harajuku and Ura-Hara began to meticulously study and collect Ivy League prep, biker jackets, and blue-collar workwear. This admiration has led local brands to adopt and create garments that rivaled, and often surpassed, their American inspirations.

For Toshikiyo Hirata, Americana was more than an aesthetic. It was a lived experience. While teaching karate in the US, he encountered vintage denim, military surplus, and the utilitarian beauty of workwear. These garments spoke in textures and fades, telling stories of labor and time. Inspired, he returned to Japan, dedicating himself to mastering denim production. His son, Kazuhiro, expanded this foundation by infusing traditional Japanese techniques like sashiko, boro, and indigo dyeing. Methods once used by farmers and laborers to extend the life of their clothing. Through Kapital, these time-honored techniques find new relevance in today’s world.

While rooted in Americana, the brand seamlessly integrates Japanese history, as seen in these hakama pants. Traditionally worn by samurai, scholars, and Shinto priests, the hakama symbolized status, discipline, and ritual. It was never intended as fashion. Kapital strips it of its rigid ceremonial context, allowing it to exist in a contemporary wardrobe.
