AW12 Undercover x Uniqlo “UU” Merino Wool Cardigan
In 2012, after a long-standing collaboration with Jil Sander that spanned five seasons, Uniqlo teamed up with Undercover to release “UU” (Undercover Uniqlo) for the Spring/Summer 2012 season.
This partnership between two seemingly dissimilar brands merged Uniqlo’s functional, accessible designs with Undercover’s experimental, avant-garde aesthetic. The collection featured an extensive lineup of clothing for the entire family, marking a revival of Undercover’s children’s garments. This line was overseen by Jun Takahashi’s wife, Riko Morishita, who designed under the name RICO for Uniqlo.
Reflecting on the collaboration’s purpose, Jun Takahashi remarked, “Price-wise and design-wise, Undercover clothing was not for everyone, but now it could be.” The partnership successfully produced bold yet accessible fashion, earning admiration from fashion enthusiasts worldwide and offering a glimpse of how Undercover’s high-concept designs could be reimagined for everyday wear.
Although the collaboration concluded after just a few seasons, its influence remains significant due to its timeless designs and cultural impact.
This merino wool cardigan from the Fall/Winter 2012 collection features bold color-blocking in deep green and burgundy.
