Junya Watanabe’s Spring Summer 2014 womenswear collection offered a respectful exploration of indigenous influences through sculptural, folkloric garments inspired by Native American and American Western dress. The show was soundtracked by primal, thumping bass (Notably, Digeridoo by Aphex Twin), heightening its tribal energy.
The impetus of the collection is the fringe. Innovated by Native Americans as a way to channel water off garments efficiently, and later popularized by modern Boho style, a fashion and lifestyle choice characterized by its free-spirited and eclectic nature. In Watanabe’s hands, these tassels became wearable sculptures.
Models wore black and blond plaits, and dreadlocks, styled by Tokyo-based Katsuya Kamo. Referencing both ravers and tribal motifs with a punk-inflected twist. Styled with feathered headdresses and structured hats perched atop their heads.
Lastly, shoes took a sharp punk-meets-west approach, with western boots adorned with spikes and straps. This ties in beautifully with the complex asymmetrical layered looks, giving rise to a newly imagined Watanabe tribe.
This beautiful shirt from the same season is made entirely from linen and reflects the same asymmetrical, structural design seen on the runway.
