The influence of rock music on Jun Takahashi's work can be traced back to his early days in the fashion industry.
While studying at Bunka Fashion College, Jun met Nigo, and they often spent their time at rock concerts.
The 90s saw a flourishing underground punk and rock scene in Urahara (Ura-Harajuku, Japan). Home to independent boutiques, Urahara served as an incubator for youth engaged in this niche.
In 1993, Takahashi opened the NOWHERE store with Nigo, stocking their brands alongside Americana and vintage items. The name derives from the Beatles' song "Nowhere Man." This small brick-and-mortar store became a collaborative hub for creatives and played a pivotal role in the countercultural shift—much like the punk music that inspired it.
As NOWHERE closed its doors, Undercover's popularity surged in the new millennium. Takahashi frequently revisited his rock and roll roots, incorporating elements of the genre into his designs, paying homage to key figures who influenced him.
In Undercover's Spring/Summer 2012 collection, we see direct references to Patti Smith. With tailored formal garments featuring the to-the-point slogan "fuck the past, fuck the future," inspired by her song Babelogue.
This beautiful leather belt features the Babelogue's opening line in cursive script: "I haven't fucked much with the past but I fuck plenty with the future."
