Continuing our feature on '90s Urahara streetwear, we spotlight a collaboration between Hysteric Glamour and Le Tabou.
Hysteric Glamour, established in 1984 by Nobuhiko Kitamura, is a Japanese fashion brand that reimagines Americana through the lens of 1960s and '70s American pop culture. Kitamura, influenced by punk and new wave music, infused the brand with bold graphics and pop culture references. The name "Hysteric Glamour" was inspired by Patti Smith's hysterical stage presence and Debbie Harry's glamorous appeal.
The brand's aesthetic revolves around themes such as provocative erotica, rock music, pop art, and comics, reflecting Kitamura's personal interests. Positioned within the Urahara movement, Hysteric Glamour broke away from the commercialization of predecessors like Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo, adopting an anti-fashion stance that resonated with Japan's youth counterculture in the 1980s. This approach helped shape the streetwear revolution in Ura-Harajuku during the 1990s.
Le Tabou, founded in 2005 by Makoto Maeda, is an accessory brand rooted in decades of design expertise. Maeda, a revolutionary in men's fashion since the 1970s, contributed to prestigious labels like Valentino in 1988 while managing his own label — GALAMOND.
In 2008, three years after establishing Le Tabou, Maeda partnered with Hysteric Glamour to create annual jewelry collections, marking one of Hysteric Glamour's longest-standing collaborations. This striking rosary necklace features onyx beads and 925 sterling silver skulls paired with a dagger cross.
